What is the lesson of the withered plant in Jonah?

This lesson is fairly unknown. Learn why God may have given and taken the shade plant away from Jonah.

In the Jonah quiz, 48% of quiz-takers answer this question incorrectly. Here is the full context and answer from Scripture — where God said the following to Jonah:

You have had pity on the plant for which you have not labored, nor made it grow, which came up in a night and perished in a night. And should I not pity Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than 120,000 persons who cannot discern between their right hand and their left—and much livestock?

Jonah 4:11

The word, pity, in this Scripture is listed in Strong’s Concordance as number 2347 which means: properly, to cover, i.e. (figuratively) to compassionate:–pity, regard, spare.

God makes a comparison for Jonah. Jonah loved a plant but not the 120,000 people of Nineveh that needed help and guidance. Interestingly, God even shows that the animals (or livestock) to Him are more important than a plant, and Jonah should have the same compassion, at least.
